Li-berry

I totally have to write a book about all the crazies at the library. This could be better than MP's Pizza Delivery stories. Maybe we'll co-author it. What do you think Mike?

Here's some of the characters with whom I already have plenty to work with:

Growly "Can I Have A Cigarette" Guy
Nice, but obviously malnourished "Can I Have One of Those (Cigarette)" Guy
Trashy way-too-many-tattoos Mom (pentagram tats so went out with hair metal)
Political Activist Guy with unusually well-groomed beard
Guy who rolls his own cigarettes on the bench by the employee entrance- unusally well groomed for someone who I see at the library almost daily, though he rides a bike, so here's the back story I've come up with...

GWRHOCOTBBTEE used to have a nice, secure, high paying job. He has a nice house, with a wife that's too pretty for him and two sons. Everything was going fine until April 28, when he lost his job after discovering the company president had been using the employees' flex-spending accounts to take trips with his 23 year old lover. Upon losing his job, he had a small break-down and took up smoking. But cigarettes are expensive, which lead him to rolling his own (his actually quite good at it now). He can't tell his wife he lost his job and sold his Mercedes, so he told her it had to get sent back to Europe for some updates (she's hot, but not all there), and that Dave from the gym would pick him up. So every morning, before his wife and sons awake, GWRHOCOTBBTEE leaves for "work," which involves sneaking out quickly and running to the park in which he stashed his bike under a bush. He then rides over to the library, sits on the bench, and rolls his own cigarettes all day. Also, his bike is really old and rusty so he obviously found it in an abandoned barn...

So, that's what we have to start with. I'm all in.

So yeah, and if you ever have a surplus of cigarettes to get rid of, just stand in front of your local library. They'll be gone in two shakes of a cat's tail.

Songbook

I started reading Nick Hornby's "Songbook" last night. It's a pretty quick easy read, obviously. If you don't know, it's basically a series of essays on some of the authors favorite (at least for the moment) songs. He talks a lot about what it is to be a true music fan, how your taste evolves, and a lot of the stuff that I think about when I think about my musical tastes, now and in the past. It's pretty spot on about most stuff. Although he does do a little bit on Bob Dylan that I don't quite agree with. Overall, it's a pretty good read so far. If you are a music fan looking for something light and easy to read, I'd suggest picking it up.

I've also started reading McSweeney's and The Believer during my down time. Both good reads if you're sitting in front of a computer with little to do.

I've also become hooked on Gilmore Girls cause, fuck, it's a good show. It's clever, and the obvious funny lines are delivered in such a way that they almost slip by. There's no fake laughter here. The characters are endearing, the music's great, and it's so much smarter than anything on the WB, and most of what's on the rest of the networks. Tuesday nights at 8/7 c and 9/8 are two episodes from last season (I think), until the new season begins in a few weeks. If you know anything about the show, you'll know that Rory (the daughter) is a big reader. I found out that the WB has a "Rory's Book Club" which is actually pretty good. Definitely quite a few "must-reads" on the list, old and new.

I've also got three other books I've started, and hopefully will actually finish one this weekend.

On the agenda:

Saturday night- The Wandering Sons w/ Her Majesty's Ship at Cranky Pat's
Thursday September 1 and Friday September 2- Fox Valley Jazz Fest
Saturday September 3- Charlie & The Chocolate Factory/Dukes of Hazzard Double Feature at Field of Scenes Drive-In Theater.

a ternader

So, if you haven't yet heard, Wisconsin got ravaged by tornados last night. Oshkosh is fine. At least from the tornados. I kinda hate this city sometimes. I don't know why exactly, but I don't like it much. It's alright for the time being, but I don't know how long I can live here. Hopefully I can make it like 1 day after Sarah is done at UW-O. That's about all I can stand of it I think... hopefully.

So I got a juicer this week. One of those things that you put fruits and vegetables in and get nasty looking shit, and delicious nutritious juice out of. I haven't made any juices yet, but I've been getting on from the store that I'm going to try to copy. I need to get some wheat grass too. So we'll see how that goes. Better than salad week, no doubt.

Otherwise, there's not a lot new to report. I won't be able to make it down to Brian's party, which I'm totally bummed about. But we've been so busy lately, and I've felt shitty for a while now. Hopefully this weekend can just be fun and relaxing.

So the two ladies that work in the office here with me are both out today. That's fine, except for at lunch time I have to lock up the office, which we're not really supposed to do, but I have to take lunch. It's the last day of the pay period, so I can't just take an extra hour at some point next week. So, oh well. Not my fault by any means. Hopefully that means I'll post again later today. Maybe I'll dig up some good shit to put on here, after "nerding" around the internet for a while.

Also, I'm a little upset that it was nice and cool and cloudy (gloomy as some people call it) this morning, and by the time I get off work it's supposed to be hot and sunny. I don't really like hot and sunny too much. Maybe it's a fat thing. I sweat.

Dan, you've been foxed.

Whoop, now my blog has been updated more recently than yours, sucker.

To the rest of my faithful, hello. More to come...

Step into my office, baby

I've been really jaded by music lately. I've had a hard time finding something that really has done it for me. It's kinda ridiculous. I have 450+ cds and a nearly full 30 gig iPod and I have trouble finding something to listen to. It must be some kind of disease. I have found a few things that have really surprised me:

1. The new Nine Inch Nails single and video are really good. I never really liked Nine Inch Nails (I refuse to abbreviate into the so over-dramatized NIN), but this song was pretty sweet, and the video is hot.
2. The new Gorillaz song is cool. I never really bothered to check them out, but have always had the feeling I might like them. I'll have to check them out now.
3. I realized I like Beck a lot. While he does have some stuff that I'm just like "...Wha?", I really dig a lot of his stuff. Sea Change was such a good record, and when it came out it really made me be like "Beck's the man." But I've since realized that he was the man all along.
4. Somehow, I sort of like System of A Down. I don't like pretty much any of those bands, but they're way different than their misunderstood-semi-goth-highschool-dyed-black-hair-and-hot-topic-clothes-wearing-fans would have you assume. They've got a lot of drama I guess in their music. Boom is a fantastic song, as well as this newer song B.Y.O.B. (which doesn't stand for Bring Your Own (Beverage, Booze, Beer), I don't think. If it does, it certainly doesn't make sense with the song.

There are a lot of bands out right now that sound like a lot of bands I liked in high school. Most of them suck. No wait, I think all of them that I've heard so far suck. I bet Matt Moore and Alex Tabb dig them, though. Anyone remember their shit green/orange/yellow hair from overbleaching? Man.

nother new one

Look at me now...

The person who hosted the old template I stole removed them, so this is my new one for now. Best I could find in the 2 and a half minutes I dedicated to looking.

I'm back, bitches

Being the perpetual failure of all things "Week"ly that I am, I've decided to forego that whole JABBICWHOLMFDIOIA:LKF nonsense. I apologize for getting all of your hopes up. I just don't feel like reviewing CDs right now. The following are reasons for that feeling, not excuses:

1. I don't have time to properly sit down and listen and contemplate. I've been really busy lately, and will be for a little while longer. Too much to do. Can't sit at work and just LISTEN to a CD.

2. I don'-wanna.

3. That's it.

Maybe someday I'll get around to it... Or just do some here or there. Maybe I'm bad at commitment to ridiculous self-ascribed challenges (see also "Watch A Different Movie Everyday For A Year" Challenge {made it to sometime in February} or "Salad Week" {had one salad}).

However I am going to post for serious now. Hooray.

Within the last hour or so a guy pulled some tissue paper off of the space shuttle or something. I don't know what it says for our space program that you can just pull stuff off of the space shuttle with your (gloved) hand.

Went to see Chris Isaak at Oneida last night. He put on a really good show. I was feeling kinda sick, which sucked, but the show was fun. It's obviously pretty scripted out ("moves", jokes, etc.), but it's all good- so were all those old Vegas showmen's shows. For the encore he wore a suit made out of little mirrors, essentially making it a "disco ball suit." That was redick.

V.O.R. Dan.

A lot of other stuff has been going on. Sarah's grandma's back surgery went ok. The ensuing redickness was not as good- lots of long days. It's all good though. They're pretty much my family up here (Sarah's family) so I don't mind it.

Went on a 15-mile bike ride Saturday. You never know how long a 15-mile bike ride is until you ride it. It's fucking long. Really long. Plus, we ran out of water by about mile 5.5, then continued on another 2 miles or so, where we eventually found a little supper club (beeteedub, we were riding on a trail in the middle of nowhere through these tiny towns and villages). The supper club served alligator and turtle. We just had water. So we filled up our water there and headed back. The problem is, you're fine on a trip like that until you stop. Then it starts in with the ass sucking. Whoop.

Been playing a lot of drums lately. Pretty much have gotten traditional grip down, which probably doesn't mean much to anyone, except maybe Dan Mc and maybe Brian. It was harder to get down then you'd think.

Apparently I've been overcoming things that are harder than I thought they'd be lately.

Oh, and holy shit. Everyone who likes good music at all needs to check out Sam Phillips. She's on Nonesuch Records. Her album (she has many, the only one I can account for...) is called A Boot and A Shoe. Holy shit. I guess being married to T-Bone Burnett probably helps. Word on the streets has it that maybe she used to be some crappy pappy Christian pop singer. Not anymore. Music sounds like Tom Waits "Mule Variations" kinda. Voice sounds like... out of control sweet/haunting. Go. Now. Stop reading this. If you want to post a comment, do it quickly, then go check her out. I'm not kidding here.... GO!

fucking kids... no respect for authority....

I SAID GO!
